The second stop on our daytrip on Friday was San Gimiano the home of medieval towers and (apparently) great white wine. Before the Renaissance the big families were constantly killing each other over some pretty ridiculous things. Their solution? Build massive towers to hide in and in an attempt to out-do each other. In Florence the city officials finally put a stop to tower building and made everyone demolish their towers down to an equal height of four stories. In San Gimiano however, the towers were never shortened and they remain very much the way they were.
